Dog Clicker Training

First, let me tell you a little bit about the book. The book was written by Morten Egtvedt & Cecilie Koeste, who are from Norway. Shortly after being published, the book became incredibly popular and was soon translated and published in Sweden, Denmark and Finland.

So what’s it all about? Here’s a quote from their website that helps sum it up…

I use clicker training! And I consider clicker training to be an extremely effective (positive) training technique when it is used correctly. In clicker training we don´t lure or bribe the dog. The treats are well hidden in our pockets until the dog offers the right behavior on his own. THEN we click and treat. This is a huge difference!

When you are clicker training (and again, I´m talking about supertraining – not just using the clicker as a marker) the dog learns to THINK. The dog learns to solve problems, to experiment, to be creative. The dog feels a sense of control of the training situation – and he loves it!

As you can see, this is a type of POSITIVE reinforcement training (not punishment, hitting, scolding, etc.) where you simply click (a little device that you press to make a clicking sound before you give a treat) and reward the dog for doing the behavior you want. The dog learns what behaviors are correct and repeats them.

All of this is based on 4 secrets, which are the keys to success. The book breaks these down simply and clearly, so there’s no guess work. They also explain why some people don’t succeed with clicker training – mainly, most people do it wrong! They click at the wrong times (which means the dog doesn’t understand what you’re trying to teach them), or too many times, or not enough times, or give treats at the wrong times, and so on. For me, the problem was waiting too long to click, but once I learned the right time to click, everything seemed to fall into place.

It may seem complicated, but it’s really easy and when it all starts working and your dog starts responding, it’s actually pretty fun.

Clicker training can give you excellent, reliable behaviors. But it can also give you something no other training method can: A happy and competent learner ready to learn new behaviors in record time!

I love the simplicity and step-by-step approach, but I also love that it’s based on science and real world experience. They’ve trained thousands of dogs successfully, and it really shows. Is the book perfect, of course not. It won’t solve every single problem you or your dog may have, but it really will show you the right way to clicker train your dog, build a stronger relationship with your dog, and have the best trained dog on the block.
